Innovation Discovery Event: September 15, 2016

On September 15, 2016, Griffiss Institute hosted an Innovation Discovery Event at their facility, in Rome, New York, supporting the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate’s (AFRL/RI) Technology Transfer mission. This all-day event consisted of three 90-minute sessions in which an AFRL Information Directorate scientist/engineer gave a presentation on the technologies that they are developing for military use, to a panel of seven individuals with strong technical or business backgrounds. After the presentations, the panel brainstormed individually, then collectively, on the technologies looking for opportunities for commercialization, and explored the feasibility of developing patent applications for the novel Intellectual Properties (IP) contained within the technology presentation, and subsequent licensing of the IP to the private industry.

This was Griffiss Institute’s fourth such event, and potential patents have come from each. These events provide extensive insight into the state-of-the-art technology solutions being developed at AFRL/RI.

The objective of the Innovation Discovery Event is to identify technologies being developed at AFRL/RI that are potentially patentable and commercially viable; to increase understanding of the commercialization opportunities that can result from technology transfer of those technologies; to increase awareness within AFRL/RI of the value of Intellectual Property protection; and to document the undisclosed inventions occurring at AFRL/RI. Transferring ideas to the civilian sector helps to strengthen the nation’s economy.

The Innovation Discovery Event serves as the first step in the process of taking innovative ideas, getting them patented, and licensing them to industry for commercialization opportunities.

Innovation Discovery Event Workshops

These workshops are designed to increase awareness of innovators of the value of intellectual property (IP) protection associated with their good ideas; identifying technologies that are potentially patentable and commercially viable; and increase understanding of the commercialization opportunities that can result from technology transfer. Technology discussions are presented and reviewed by panelists where many suggestions for commercial applications are identified and discussed resulting in a determination to seek a patent.

If the innovations are determined to be patentable, the GI collaborates with the innovators in filing the necessary documents to protect their intellectual property, and ultimately receive the patent.
