Griffiss Institute Kicks-Off 4th Annual International Quantum Information Science Workshop in Central New York

Q4IRome, NY – From July 12-14, Innovare Advancement Center will host the 4th Annual Quantum Information Science Workshop (Q4I), a global connectivity initiative to build an open ecosystem of government, academic, and industry collaborators that are shaping the future of quantum innovation.

Q4I is hosted by the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, at the Griffiss Institute’s world-renowned Innovare Advancement Center in partnership with NYSTEC and The State University of New York. Participants at Q4I will hear from thought leaders, top-tier researchers, industry executives, higher education leaders, and students as they showcase different pathways to engage in quantum information science.

“We are so pleased to once again welcome trailblazers in the quantum community to the annual Q4I workshop where they will learn, collaborate, and network with fellow experts about innovations in the field,” said Dr. Michael Hayduk, Deputy Director for the Air Force Research Laboratory - Information Directorate. “The Air Force continuously supports this workshop because it is an efficient and effective platform on which to build our nation’s quantum capacity, as part of a global initiative to build an open ecosystem of government, academic, and industry collaborations.”

“The Griffiss Institute is thrilled to host the fourth annual Q4I workshop at the Innovare Advancement Center right here in Central New York,” said Heather Hage, President & CEO of the Griffiss Institute. “The work being done here this week advances our mission to open the crossroads between talent and technology for our partners. You can genuinely feel the excitement as the best and brightest converge to share their proudest work and look to the future to ensure America remains on the cutting edge.”

This year’s program will feature two keynote speakers. The first is Dr. Jungsang Kim, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics and Computer Science at Duke University, where he has led many collaborative research and development projects at the frontier of foundational quantum computing technologies since 2004. Kim is also a Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of IonQ, founded to commercialize trapped ion quantum computers. The second is Dr. Wojciech Kozlowski, Quantum Network Engineer at QuTech, where he leads the institute’s quantum network software stack engineering and full stack integration efforts. He is also co-chair of the QIRG at the IRTF.

Attendees will also get to experience technical breakout sessions that focus on quantum networking and computing, with industry leaders from NASA, IBM, Google, Rigetti, Honeywell, SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Cornell University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Delft University of Technology, and more. Quantum networking and computing workshops at Q4I will range from benchmarking and error mitigation to machine learning and chemical applications. Researchers will present their work during poster sessions and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions directly of Department of Defense officials.

A major highlight for many, will be the opportunity for potential partners to learn how and when to collaborate and contract with the Air Force Research Laboratory on their work. Participants will discover how to navigate process, procedure, and productive paths toward bringing their concepts to life for both military and commercial uses.

“We’re proud to support the Q4I workshop because it aligns perfectly with our mission to advise clients how to use technology to meet their goals and achieve real outcomes,” said Kevin Owens, President & CEO of NYSTEC. “It’s in our best interest – and the best interest of the nation – to empower current and future clients with the tools they need to successfully bring quantum solutions to market, in partnership with the Air Force and other players that the Griffiss Institute brings to the table.”

The Q4I event was developed to serve as an unprecedented gathering of expertise around quantum computing and science. Air Force Research Laboratory, in partnership with the Griffiss Institute is leading the way to establish the Innovare Advancement Center and surrounding research centers, universities, and businesses as the leading hub for quantum in the Mohawk Valley.

This partnership is centered around technology transfer, the key to ensuring America remains globally competitive in an increasingly technologically driven world. By leveraging military advancements from the lab bench to the kitchen counter, the Griffiss Institute works to grow the pool of talented STEM students and professionals that will discover the next big idea.
